Stiletto Style
Walking out of class today, I was surprised by a funny clicking sound. It was like a very small horse – click click … click click.
It was a girl (she had been in the row in front of me in class) wearing stiletto knee-high leather boots. Above the leather boots were striped nylons, and the whole thing was topped off by a wool dress-coat.
Ok fine, I don\’t know what it was called. It was coat that was long like a dress.
But the final touch was a little Gucci purse, obviously too small to carry anything of importance, but prominently displayed beneath her platinum-blonde dyed hair. Flaunt, flaunt.
The thing to remember, though, is that this class starts at 8:15am. And that I live in Minnesota: it\’s the middle of winter.
Who in their right mind spends an extra hour getting dressed up in high heels to go to a stupid New Media Culture lecture shortly after the crack of dawn? Why?
Plus, the whole look is kind-of destroyed – don\’t you think – by the overstuffed, dirty, Jansport backpack that looks straight outta\’ high school.
Why do women wear high heels, anyway? Oh, I know this isn\’t a question of great import, and it\’s probably been asked before, but I\’m suddenly fascinated by it.
I mean, looking at this girl walk, especially after we got outside (you bet I followed her), was like watching a circus bear try to balance on a beach ball. I had to pretend to cough to keep from laughing.
She looked like she was about to topple over at literally (and I don\’t use that word lightly) every step.
High heels, for all that I can see, are specifically designed to be the worst possible kind of footwear for doing anything that involves standing up.
A while ago I read in one of those \”college style\” sections that designer purses are high heels were the new thing on campuses in the south, and I knew it would someday come here. But I didn\’t know how much more ridiculous a silly fashion trend is when you see it in person.
And I\’m not even going to start writing about the girl in that same class who wears a different Von Dutch trucker hat (off kilter) to each lecture.
PS – I\’m listening to music – loud – on headphones while I\’m writing this. I have a tremendously hard time writing (or, actually, even thinking) while I\’m listening to music. So I\’m forcing myself to do it, in hopes of retraining myself. I will be a better writer! Why a better writer needs to be able to write with headphones on is not something I can explain right now (probably because of the music).
