Online news grows as old journalism struggles

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2004

The Project for Excellence in Journalism has released a report concluding that while most the audiences for most sectors of journalism are shrinking, the online sector is a rare area of growth.
The 8 Major Trends section notes this indirectly:
Much of the new investment in journalism today – much of the information revolution generally – [...]

Review: \”Prom: No Turning Back\” is all turning back

Monday, March 22nd, 2004

After \”Prom: No Turning Back\”, a new play produced by the Children\’s Theater Company and Philadelphia\’s New Paradise Laboratories, the important thing to remember is, well, you know.
That\’s what the wheelchair-bound principal tells the post-prom crowd of students: \”The important thing to remember is, well, you know.\”
Except, well, you don\’t. And you get the [...]

Fishing for customers with WiFi bait.

Friday, March 19th, 2004

Update: White Rock has changed their wireless policy; they now have free Wi-Fi. So, pretend this post is about a different coffee shop with the same name. Haha.
Imagine this scenario: you go into your doctor\’s office for a checkup. You arrive a little early, because you were in the neighborhood dropping your [...]

How to stop the British invasion … of beetles, that is.

Thursday, March 18th, 2004

I\’m trying to save the life of an old oak tree.
It\’s in the back yard, behind the clothes-lines no one has used for years. It shoots up like a reverse-waterfall from beside the sidewalk, wrinkling the cement.
Actually, I\’m not sure it\’s an oak.
But it is huge. While it is firmly and obviously on my property, [...]

local.google.com

Thursday, March 18th, 2004

Check out Google\’s new tool (no, I mean search tool) that lets you look for results within a specified geographical region.
Pretty cool, although it may still be a little rough – my search for \”Bruno Bornsztein\” in Saint Paul, MN, turned up no result. Ack! I\’m disappearing!

Wisdom teeth?

Monday, March 15th, 2004

Well, I do feel a little dumber now that they\’re out (all four were pulled this morning).
Posting will be light for a while – at least until I can figure out a way to type without drooling all over the keyboard.
Update: I\’m feeling a bit better now – not really in any pain at all. [...]

Solidarity with Spain = drink wine?

Friday, March 12th, 2004

I guess that make sense, sort of.
Anyway, 1st Grand Ave. Liquors , here in Saint Paul, has all Spanish wines on sale, 20% off. I\’m guessing this is related to the bombings Tuesday, since they have big signs and a Spanish flag hanging in the window. I\’m not sure how it will benefit anyone in [...]

A big fan of a little game

Friday, March 12th, 2004

The thing is, I\’m not really a sports guy. I\’m not into statistics, I don\’t like knowing useless trivia about how many runs a player had in his rookie year, or things like that. Sometimes I get excited when a team I like gets close to winning something big, but mostly I take the attitude [...]

Madrid te quiero…

Thursday, March 11th, 2004

Here\’s roundup of Spanish-language blogs covering today\’s slaughter in Madrid.
Sadly, I\’ve been on those trains, adding another item to the list of places I\’ve been that have been attacked by terrorists. As I recall, they were amazingly clean and well-maintained.
Madrid\’s El Pais newspaper has a really good flash graphic that describes the attacks (in [...]
