In journalism school they always said we had to learn the rules before we could break them. I have not found this to be the case.
In October, 2003, the Twins lost to the Yankees in the first round of the playoffs. I wrote an Op/Ed about it and the Minneapolis Star Tribune printed it. They also gave me $100.
In October, 2002, my downstairs neighbor went crazy and started threatening my roommates and I with a baseball bat. I wrote an Op/Ed about it and the Minnesota Daily printed it. They gave me no money.
Despite all the money and glamor, my career as a freelance Op/Ed writer who only writes about things that have to do with baseball was short. After that I started publishing myself on my blog, where the pay was worse and the audience smaller but I never got rejected.
